Raising ducks responsibly

What we have learned about breeds, housing, and seasonal hatching on a small homestead.

Ducks need access to water for healthy bills, eyes, and feathers.

Ducks are hardy, personable, and productive when their basic needs are met: clean water, predator-safe shelter, good nutrition, and room to forage.

Breeds we work with

  • Khaki Campbell — prolific layers, efficient feed conversion
  • Pekin — friendly, hardy, widely available
  • Indian Runner — upright, excellent foragers, steady layers
  • Muscovy — quieter birds; different breeding habits

Housing & safety

  • Secure overnight housing against raccoons, foxes, and aerial predators
  • Access to water deep enough to clean bills and eyes
  • Dry nesting areas for consistent egg collection
  • Shade and ventilation in warm months

Incubation & hatch season

Fertilized eggs and ducklings require careful timing, clean equipment, and biosecurity. We monitor temperature and humidity during incubation and handle hatchlings with clean brooders until they feather out.
